The Skylark pram dinghies were developed to
provide a range of simple small boats with the maximum available
space for their respective lengths. They have three chines
to give a wide bottom with high initial stability and plenty
of room to move around inside the boat. The Skylark 6 is suitable
as a child's row boat or sailing dinghy. The Skylark 8 has
sufficient capacity for 2-3 adults when used as a tender and
makes a handy car-toppable sailing dinghy. Either could be
used with a small motor.
The Skylarks are available as kits for home construction.
The kits include all boat parts, epoxy and fasteners plus
full building instructions. Construction should take about
two weekends and a few evenings, a little longer for the sailing
versions. You will need a few basic hand tools and no experience
of wood-working is necessary.
9 foot, 10 foot and 12 foot versions are also available; details
and prices available on request.

9ft Pram dinghy. Designed by Andrew Woolstenholme

|
|
• Length 9' 0" (2.74m) Beam 4' 5"
(1.35m)
• Draft dagger bd. down 1' 10" (0.58m) up 7"
(0.175m)
• Weight ex dagger bd & rudder 85 lb (38.5kg)
• Sail area 44 sq. ft. (4.08 sq.m.)
The hull has a flat bottom panel and three panels each side
forming the bilge and topsides. This makes it very stable
and good looking on the water. It both rows and sails well.
The 6mm thick hull employs the familiar 'stitch and glue'
method of construction using epoxy resins and epoxy compatible
tape. The transoms are of solid mahogany. The 4 piece laminated
gunwale/rubbing strake provides a great deal of strength to
the hull, especially important in a boat that can receive
hard knocks at times. Cross bearers fitted to the inside of
the flat bottom panel serve both to stiffen the panel and
also raise the floorboards above the panel. The three thwarts
are pine.
Two versions are available, the rowing only
version and the sailing version, which has a dagger board
and a lifting rudder. The spars for the standing lug are of
wood. The standard boat is finished in a single colour outside
and is varnished inside. Floorboards are painted. |

9ft Cat rig dinghy.

|
|
• Length 9' 1" (2.77m) Beam 4' 2"
(1.26m)
• Draft 6" / 2' 6" (0.16 / 0.76m)
• Sail area 43 sq. ft. (4 sq. m)
• Approx weight 105 lb (48kg)
The hull is the Stornoway 9 hull but we have made the boat
a more sophisticated one by using a proper centre board instead
of a dagger board, a Cat rig giving maximum room inside the
boat, fore and aft buoyancy tanks and slatted side seats.
It also has removable floor boards. Newly developed stowable
oars are available, that can be stowed neatly under the side
seats. The mast is unstayed, thus enabling the boat to be
rigged and de-rigged very easily and quickly.
The kit includes all hull panels machined to
shape as well as all other parts machined and shaped, leaving only
a minimum of trimming to be done during the building process.
All fasteners, epoxy resin and instructions are in the kit. |

9ft stern dinghy. Designed by Selway Fisher

|
|
• Length 9' 1" (2.77m) Beam 4'2"
or 4'6"(1.26 or 1.37m)
• Draft 6" / 2' 6" (0.16 / 0.76m)
• Sail area 43 sq. ft. (4 sq. m)
• Approx weight 90 lb (41kg)
The Stornoway 9 is the first of a new class of dinghies which
incorporate firm bilges and moderately full transoms needed
to carry loads safely and to give good sailing qualities without
dragging a large transom through the water. The plank shapes
have been computer generated for simple stitch and glue construction
and to make her eye sweet, she has five planks per side in addition
to a narrow hog plank which greatly simplifies construction.
Planks are of 6mm marine ply as are the thwarts. All other
components are of mahogany. The sailing rig is a simple Lug
rig with a plain mast boom and yard. |

12ft stern dinghy. Designed by Selway Fisher

The Stornoway 12 has six planks per side giving her a lovely
round hull. She has plenty of internal space with side benches.
As with her smaller sister, the hull planks, thwarts and side
benches are of 6mm marine ply with other components of mahogany.
The sailing rig is normally a high peaked gaff rig, again
with fairly simple spars. |
